Awit ng Ulila or "Kantahin Ng Ulila" (La Canción del Huérfano; Song of An Orphan) is one of the oldest surviving patriotic Kundiman. As opposed to the later Kundiman Art songs by Francisco Santiago, Nicanor Abelardo, Bonifacio Abdon etc. the earlier form of Kundiman is NOT written in "triplet" (3/4 or waltz tempo) but follows the tempo of the popular songs or 'Canto Popular' of the era in danza/habanera tempo. Jose, fondly known as Pepito, took the road less traveled by choosing classical opera as his vocation and career. He left the Philippines in 1926 to pursue his dream and brought honor and fame to the family and to the country before World War II. Using the stage name Jose Santiago-Font, he sang in opera houses in Italy, South America and the United States.
